A conversation between readers and the editor of The Morning Journal in Lorain, Ohio

Wednesday, March 10, 2010

So far, so good

It's the third day for this Tell the Editor blog, and I've been happy with the reception it has gotten so far. I'm hoping it can really grow as a productive and informative conversation on both sides of the computer screen.  My thanks to everyone who has sent in a post. The exchange of ideas and information has been enjoyable.

On a related note, The Morning Journal's evolution into a media company that swiftly brings you the news you want, the way you want it, continues as well.

As mentioned previously, we now break news on our Web site, www.MorningJournal.com as it happens, and we update it throughout the day. Reporters are capturing more local news on their Flip video cameras, as well as scribbling facts in their notebooks.

And for the growing number of people who connect with friends and the world through social media such as Facebook and Twitter, The Morning Journal now gives you breaking news Tweets and Facebook posts that link  back to the developing stories on our Web site. Reporters Kelly Metz and Megan Rozsa have been especially good at this. Stories, and more, on our Web site also are available by RSS feed.

As day moves into evening and night,  the growing body of news information coalesces into the most clear, complete and authoritative accounts available of the day's news. That comprehensive look at local events becomes the contents of The Morning Journal that is delivered in print on paper to your home or office. That newspaper you can consume and digest slowly, at your leisure. Many print stories also tell you how to find extra detail, such as more photos, a video or pertinent documents on our Web site to enhance the story.

Lots more good stuff on the way to tell you about. Stay tuned.

The Morning Journal is also a business that is trying to be successful in a broader area but of course has its bricks and mortar in Lorain .

As a "Lorain" business what do you see as negatively impacting your doing business within the city and also what positively impacts your business by being located in Lorain?

What would you like to see happen here that would bring other businesses back and having the MJ be continuing presence on Broadway? What role do you see for the MJ in Lorain ( City )?

As editor of this newspaper you should read this column: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/03/11/AR2010031102523_pf.html

I don't care if you approve this comment, but you should read this column.

A person could fill a book answering these questions, but I won't.

Briefly:

It's no surprise that the ailing local economy makes it tougher for any business in Lorain.

The "positive" of doing business in Lorain is the presence of so many loyal newspaper readers and local advertisers who recognize the value of putting some of their scarce dollars into our publication.

I'd like to see a growing "can-do" attitude and a determination to make the most of Lorain's assets. A defeatist viewpoint hinders Lorain. People get fixated on problems and as a result fail to see great opportunities.
The newspaper's role is the same as any good paper anywhere: Report the news fairly and accurately. Be a watchdog over government. Stand up for what's right. Be a voice for the voiceless.

I was recently "banned" as a contributor for what you (originally) classified as "abusive language".

When I provided you with links to Morning Journal articles (not viewer comments) using the same word, you changed your position to "berating people and being rude" (even though my comment wasn't directed to anyone.

It would appear that you are sending mixed signals. Would you care to speak to this issue?

Ohio_golfer,

No mixed signals. Some words can be used in different senses. Yours were abusive and berating and rude and the others were not.

Hi Mr.T.,
This is a friendly reminder.Incomplete complete profile.I keep checking it, and it is still the same. Hey,has anybody written an article about the Ron Paul petition to stop the national I.D.? How about an article that explains that it could be passed into law? If not, why not? I think that is very important news that everyone should be told about.I have noticed that the medias do not inform the public of these important issues. Why?

If you've seen a good article on the ID topic, copy and paste a link to it here and share it.

The only "media" whose behavior I can explain is The Morning Journal's. The others will have to account for themselves. Our main mission is local news and opinion.

Mr.T, Your paper should cover national news as well as local news.Especially things will influence everyone's life.It is not right to deny the public of this sort of news.
Even if I had a link, it still would not reach the majority of your readers. The article needs to be printed in the paper, preferably with a large enough heading that people don't miss it.
Glad to see you are okay.

Mr.T.,
I forwarded you an email in regards to this national I.D..If you didn't get it,I will forward it again.
If people do not know that President Obama is trying to pass such a thing, how can their voices be heard about the issue? This thing could require an eye scan, finger printing, etc.. and it sounds like the mark of the beast in the Bible. Don't you think people need to know about this danger?? If I were the editor, it would be on the front page, with bold headlines, sending people to the petition to sign to stop it, AND giving the contact numbers of our state reps.. To not do a story on this is something that would be done in China, if you follow my drift.

Debate about a national ID card has been going around for several years. It's no secret. We have printed stories about it too in the past, and you just told people about it once again right here on this blog. That makes you a "community journalist."
People can read about the topic of national ID cards in lots of other publications in print or online, but the reason most people buy The Morning Journal is to find out what's going on in the Lorain area. That's our main franchise, local news.

"Something that would be done in China" would be for me to have deleted your warnings about national ID instead of replying. See the difference?

Ok, so it's not completely like China, but I'd say it's not far off. When people have to SEARCH for what could be some of the most important news of their lives.
Did the M.J. report on it when Bill Clinton GAVE away a lot of our national parks to the U.N.?
Did they report on it when a state out west was instituting the NAIS Law, (which forces people to tell the government about every move they make with their animals?)This law has been renamed now, but hasn't gone away, and still could be enforced here at a future date.
How about Pier J.? (which is a threat to our national safety.)
How about the Social Security benefits being sent to MEXICO..for illegals who worked here and left.
How about the story of Schwartzennager (sp) signing over the whole state of California for incorporating U.N. measures? Those people may not even have any property rights left! And it could happen here next, but that's not important to M.J. readers?
I could go on and on..
Can't you see where this is heading, and why people need to hear these important issues?
You can talk local till you are blue in the face, but how can you live with yourself knowing that you are not giving the people the information they NEED to keep this a free country where people have any rights? I could not sleep at night if were not telling people about these issues.
Americans PAID for those parks that Clinton gave away, and nobody even knows it happened!! Now the U.N. is making them off limits to humans with their communistic Agenda 21..
People are ignorant of the facts, and the medias are at fault. M.J. included, and this has got to stop.
Surely you can see how wrong this is?

Hi Mr.T,
I'm waiting for a reply.
P.S. M.J.'s online ad states, "OHIO DAILY NEWSPAPER COVERING LOCAL, REGIONAL, AND NATIONAL NEWS." Looks to me like you are just trying to find any excuse not to tell people the truth about what's going on in Washington. Or perhaps this should be considered "False Advertising?"
